THIRTY – LOST OPPORTUNITIES

“I think your friend left this behind,” said Ruby.

Rick folded down the newspaper and looked at the object in Ruby’s hand: a cell phone. Ruby had been cleaning up the booth while Rick nursed his beer.

“I found it on his seat,” she said.

“Well, shit,” said Rick. “I guess it must be Grant’s, all right. I’ll hold onto it until I see him again. We seem to be running into each other all the time lately. Hope he doesn’t need it tonight.”

“If you’re lucky, you might be able to catch him,” said Ruby, smiling gently at the cop.

Rick smiled back at her. “Is that your subtle way of trying to clear me out of here?”

“Well,” said Ruby, “we do close at eleven.”

“What time is it now?”

“Eleven forty.”

Rick looked around. Sure enough, the place was deserted. He was the last one there.

“Shoot, woman, why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t want to disturb your reading,” Ruby said with a wink.

Rick popped the cell phone into his pocket, settled the bill, and headed off to find Grant.
