Mages & Magic Cover Roughs

Though I spend a lot of time writing, graphic design is an equally important part of my publishing work — and often takes up more of my time than I intend.  It’s important to try to get the design elements of a cover just right, and every story needs a cover now — at least, if I intend to post it for Kindle or other e-book formats on Smashwords.  At the moment, I’m working on a cover for Blue Kingdoms: Mages & Magic (out by the end of 2010, I hope), and I thought I’d share the current versions of the cover with you.

These are just cover roughs, and you’ll be able to see how they progress as time passes.  For instance, it’s unlikely there will be a big shadow across the main character’s face when I’m done.  (If it’s still there, kick me!)  At the moment, I’m trying to choose between a new Blue Kingdoms logo (designated “sword”) and the older one (designated “ancient”).  I’ve re-designed the authorship area — Stephen D. Sullivan & Jean Rabe’s — to bring it into line with my new brand look.

Why not check out both covers and then let me know which logo you prefer.  You can drop me an e-mail or vote in the poll below the thumbnails.  Why not vote right now?
